The epigram is preceded by the following non-metrical introduction: 'Νικολάου διακόνου τῆς ἐν Κωνσταντινουπόλει τοῦ Θεοῦ μεγάλης ἐκκλησίας πατριαρχικοῦ νοταρίου· πρωτοπροέδρου τῶν πρωτοσυγκέλλων. καὶ νομοφύλακος τῆς τῶν ῥωμαίων βασιλείας τοῦ δοξαπατρῆ ἐξήγησις τῶν τετραστίχων ἰαμβικῶν παραινέσεων. τοῦ ἐν ἁγίοις πατρὸς ἡμῶν Γρηγορίου τοῦ Θεολόγου'.
