Ματθαίου τόδε ἔργον, ἀριστοπόνοιο [κλεινοῦ] τελώνου,
ὃς τόκον ἔφθασε θεῖον ἀπειρογάμοιο γυναικός,
ἣ τέκεν ἄσπορον υἱόν, ὃν οὐ χάδεν οὐρανὸς εὐρύς,
Χριστόν ἀεὶ ζώοντα θεόν, βροτὸν αὐτὸν ἐόντα.

Comment Strictly speaking the given lemma refers to the entire series of the epigrams on the four evangelists, which we present in the database as separate entries. Thus, a more accurate lemma for that particular entry would have been the last part of the title: 'Εἰς τὸν Ματθαῖον'.

The verses have been copied by a scribe of the 15th century and do not function here as book epigrams. The same epigram and those following immediately can be found in Göttingen MS Theol. 28, dated 1006, which might have been the exemplar of our copyist.
