bewegt der Zöllner zugleich auch die Steine.
Daher schweige trügerische Leier des Orpheus!
Denn Ioannes fertigte eine außergewöhnliche (Leier) mit Mühen an,
welche die steinharte Natur weich macht.

The epigram occurs in two manuscripts as a poem of 3 verses: Patmos, Mone tou Hagiou Ioannou tou Theologou 334 (f. 12v) and Vienna - ÖNB suppl. gr. 50* (f. 24v).
Lauxtermann (2003: 303) points to the similarity of v. 3 with the incipit of another book epigram: Σίγησον, Ὀρφεῦ· ῥίψον, Ἑρμῆ, τὴν λύραν (https://www.dbbe.ugent.be/types/3271) which may have inspired the composition of this one. This parallel had previously been pointed out by Sajdak (1919: 44). |
