| Palaeographical information | Written in two columns, to be read horizontally. The epigram is written in red ink. The same ink can be encountered in different parts of the codex, namely for initials and signes de renvoi in scholia, for the entire text of some scholia, for interlinear glosses, for some of the minor initials and titles in the main text, and for some elements of tables. The epigram was probably written by one of the hands responsible for the main text and the scholia. Still, in the epigram, Fettaugen-elements are more pronounced. In the same spread, two more kinds of red ink are visible, different from that used for the epigram: (1) reddish-brown applied for the initials of chapter titles in the pinax (f. 5*v), as well as for the treatise's title and the interlace headpiece (f. 1r); (2) more intense cinnabar-red used in f. 1r for the initial Π (in the beginning of the main text) and for a second, apparently older headpiece that seems to have been erased before adding the present headpiece and title at the same place. |
| Contextual information | The epigram is copied in the upper margin, above the pinax preceding the main text (Ptolemy's Almagest). The codex opens with a protective binion, apparently connatural with the body of the codex. The next quire, i.e. the first quire of the body of the codex (a senion bearing signature α, comprising folios currently numbered 5*-11), opens with a folio, currently numbered f. 5*, whose recto is blank and whose verso contains the pinax of the treatise's chapters, by the same hand that starts transcribing the main text of the treatise on the next page, i.e. f. 1r. Judging by the position and letter size (and by the use of the same red ink of glosses and scholia), the epigram was probably added at a moment posterior to the transcription of the pinax and of the main text. |
