Ὁ παρθένος τί; Τὸν τεκόντα τὸν κάτω
λιπών, τεκόντα τὸν Θεὸν κτᾶται μόνον.
Ὡς παρθένος γάρ, πρὸς τὸν ἐκ τῆς Παρθένου
καλοῦντα Χριστόν, οἷα συγγενὴς τρέχει.
Ἐντεῦθεν εἰς τὸ στῆθος Αὐτοῦ γνησίως
πεσών, ἐκεῖθεν τὴν ἄβυσσον λαμβάνει
τῆς γνώσεως καὶ πάντα πλουτεῖ τὸν κόσμον,
μυστηρίων ἄγνωστα καὶ τοῖς ἀγγέλοις.
Θεηγόρος τέταρτος οὖν Ἰωάννης
Εὐαγγελιστής, ἀλλʹ ἐν ὕψει δογμάτων
πρῶτος, μέγιστος, ἄκρος, ἀρχὴ καὶ τέλος.

This would imply the poem was not an isolated case, but a part of a cycle of four epigrams in honour of the evangelists.
