Αὐτοκράτορ κράτιστε, πορφύρας γόνε,
αὐτοκράτορ μέγιστε, τοῦ γένους κλέος,
ὡς στερρός, ὡς ἄγρυπνος, ὡς φιλῶν λόγους,
ὡς ὀξύς, ὡς ἄριστος εἰς θήραν τούτων,
ὡς ἀγαθὸς καὶ συμπαθὴς ὢν τὴν φύσιν,
χρηστός, γαληνός, εὐμενὴς ὑπὲρ φύσιν,
ἡδύς, προσηνής, εὐστεφὴς αὐτοκράτωρ·
Θεοῦ μιμητὴς ὡς ὑπὲρ πάντας πέλων,
ἄναξ χαριτώνυμε, δόξα τοῦ γένους,
δέχου συνήθως εὐμενῶς πόνον τόνδε
ὅν σοι καθυπούργησα χειρὶ προθύμῳ,
ὡς ἂν ἔχῃς ἥδυσμα καὶ βίβλον τήνδε,
τρυφῆς λογικῆς εὐπορῶν συγγραφέως.
Ἀλλ’ ὦ δικαστὰ τῶν σοφῶν πάντων λόγων
καὶ νοῦ καθαρέ, τῶν ψυχῶν ἐπιστάτα
καὶ τῶν ἐπὶ γῆς δυσμενῶν ἀντιστάτα
καὶ τῶν παρ’ ἡμῖν εἰσφορῶν ζυγοστάτα
καὶ τῆς φυσικῆς μουσικῆς χοροστάτα
καὶ τῆς καθ’ ἡμᾶς φύσεως πρωτοστάτα
καὶ φῶς ἐναργῶς ἐξελέγχων τὰς φύσεις
καὶ πῦρ δαπανῶν τῶν ψυχῶν πάντας πόνους,
ὦ γλυκύτης ἄρρητε καὶ εὐθυμία
καὶ τερπνότης ἄφραστε καὶ κραταρχία
νικῶσα καὶ κρύπτουσα πᾶν λόγου σθένος,
ἡ φαιδρότης, ἡ τέρψις, ἡ θυμηδία,
ἡ χρηστότης, ἡ χάρις, ἡ κοινὴ δρόσος,
ἡ ζωοποιὸς τῶν ἐμῶν λόγων κράσις,
ἡ καλοποιὸς τοῦ βροτῶν γένους φύσις,
ὦ βασιλεῦ, τὸ θαῦμα τοῦ κοινοῦ κρότου
καὶ πάντα κινοῦν εἰς Θεοῦ δόξαν στόμα

καὶ σῶμα καινῶν δεκτικὸν χαρισμάτων
καὶ πνεῦμα κοινὸν εἰς πνοῆς λειτουργίαν,
ὦ κόσμε τῆς γῆς, τῆς φυλῆς, τῆς ἀξίας,
τῆς πορφυρίδος, τοῦ γένους, τῆς ἑστίας,
τῆς τοῦ στέφους χάριτος ὡς καὶ τοῦ θρόνου,
τῆς τοῦ βίου πλάστιγγος ὡς καὶ τοῦ τρόπου,
τῆς τοῦ Λόγου σάλπιγγος ὡς καὶ τοῦ κράτους·
ὁ νοῦς ὁ γοργός, ὁ βραβεὺς τῶν πραγμάτων,
ἡ γλῶσσα τῆς γῆς, ἡ στολὶς τῶν κτισμάτων,
ὁ τῶν λόγων θάλαμος, ὁ στεφηφόρος,
τὸ τοῦ κράτους ἔσοπτρον, αὐτὸ τὸ κράτος,
ὦ καὶ φυτουργὲ τῶν καλῶν αὐτοκράτορ
καὶ νοῦ γεωργὲ μυστικῆς εὐκαρπίας
καὶ ζῶν ἀτεχνῶς ἀμπελὼν πτωχοτρόφε
λειμὼν ἀγαθὲ τῶν Θεοῦ χαρισμάτων,
ἑωσφόρε κράτιστε τοὺς ἄλλους κρύπτων,
οὐρανὲ δόξαν τοῦ Θεοῦ καταγγέλλων
καὶ κόσμε κοινὲ τῆς λογικῆς φύσεως·
ὁ μὲν κραταιὸς οὐρανοῦ καὶ γῆς ἄναξ,
εἴη κρατύνων εἰς ἀμέτρους ἡλίους
τὸ σὸν κράτος, κράτιστε, σὺν τῇ κρατίστῃ·
θαυμασίᾳ αὐγούστῃ πορφυροβλάστῳ.
Σὺ δὲ στόλιζε, θάλπε καὶ φύλαττέ με
ὀλβιοδώρῳ σωστικῇ σου προνοίᾳ.

ὁ Εὐγενικὸς τολμηρῶς προσφθέγγομαι,

Comment Aschenbrenner & Kubina (2022: 1103): "It is a kind of cento, literally a “patchwork” that stitches verses from preexisting poems (often the Bible or Homer) into a new composition; here up to two-thirds of Eugenikos’s lines are taken from poems by Manuel Philes".

This book epigram occurs in two manuscripts. Aschenbrenner & Kubina (2022: 1140): "As shown with regard to the textual history of Appian, they both derive from the same (lost) exemplar. It is not unlikely that this manuscript was the copy that Eugenikos dedicated to John VIII, which contained the book epigram on the first page and Appian’s History (at least parts of it), copied by Eugenikos himself."
