| Translation(s) | Keep your mind’s paths straight. Restrain your stomach, and your tongue even more. Pursue in life the narrow gate and flee from the world and all worldly things. For this wretched life deceives everyone and sends them naked to the pits of hell. |
| Comment | The epigram is an adaption of a four line poem attributed to both Eustathios metropolitan of Ikonion and Greogory of Nazianzos (cf. related types). This six verse version occurs as part of a collection of paraenetic poems by Ps. Gregory of Nazianzos in mss. Rom. Angel. gr. 28, Berol. gr. 97 and Athos Iberon 92. An eight verse adaption can be found in ms. Par. gr. 400 in the same collection of paraenetic poems. |
