| Palaeographical information | Written in the lower margin in five columns, to be read horizontally. Written by a later hand; cf. Luzzatto (2000: 648): 'copiate da un dotto di prima eta paleologa'. Luzzatto (2000: 647) indicates the difficult reading of the word 'στερν(ί)(κ)(ην)' (v. 2): “Il copista di età paleologa ha scritto qui una sequenza incomprensibile nella quale solo στερ è sicuro (…): è incerto infatti se segue ν(αι) con circonflesso (lettura che ritengo più probabile) o ν(ικ) con segno tachigrafico di ην”. She proposes στέρ<γετ>αι. |
| Contextual information | The epigram refers to Herodotus' Histories 1.94.2-3 (f. 25v). Luzzatto (2000: 646): "Seguendo Ateneo Tzetzes contesta ad Erodoto I’affermazione fatta in 1.94, 3 (alla fine del famoso logos lidio) secondo cui i giochi con i dadi (κῦβοι), con gli astragali e con la palla, eccetto quelli con i πεσσοί, sarebbero stati inventati in Lidia durante una terribile carestia al tempo del re Atys: citando alcuni versi dell' Iliade e dell' Odissea Tzetzes dimostra che gli eroi omerici, molto piu antichi di Atys, conoscevano già tutti quei giochi." |
