This poem is a comparison between the repentant monk and a diseased plant in the garden; a theme which is regularly found in the gospels.
Note the similarity to the parable of the barren fig tree; (Luke 13:6–9): 'Ἔλεγεν δὲ ταύτην τὴν παραβολήν· Συκῆν εἶχέν τις πεφυτευμένην ἐν τῷ ἀμπελῶνι αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἦλθεν ζητῶν καρπὸν ἐν αὐτῇ καὶ οὐχ εὗρεν. (7.)
