• The person who wrote this book writes thus. I have accomplished an eminent work, like nothing else, having written in the turn of four moons, although I served in the imperial palace, this whole book collecting the wise canons, (5) that the synods and the fathers, the priests inspired by God, have arranged as a great happiness for the mortals to come. I wrote by order of the glorious prelate, the shepherd of the pious flocks, the holy Theoctistos, whom the city of Hadrian has obtained by lot as its renowned guide, (10) a wise expert of the orthodox dogma and the doctrines: a pious and irreproachable life, adhering to these precepts, makes him appear glorious and most holy. Since he is well aware of the strength of the divine canons, he will certainly use this book not to learn them, (15) rather to go through them again: indeed, I say thus myself, having experienced his wisdom and his sensible mind, and having taken wonder in my soul. Furthermore, the prelates above all love to carry these canons always with them, like a weapon or an instrument, (20) so that they may drive out the hordes of Belial and, on the contrary, perform acts pleasing to God. Now, excellent father and genuine priest of God, living monument of virtues, very distinguished among the prelates, if you address prayers to God for me, (25) I will thank you, for I myself for your sake have launched myself into unattempted labours, I who, having the name Manuel, am also called Planoudes.

• Je me suis donné plus de peine pour ce travail que pour tout autre,
  puisque le temps de quatre rotations complètes de la lune,
  et tout en fréquentant les palais impériaux,
  j’ai écrit ce livre qui contient des sages canons
  fixés par les synodes et les pères pieux, les exégètes des choses divines,
  grand bonheur pour la postérité.
  Et j’ai écrit à l’instigation du prélat illustre,
  pasteur de pieuses brebis, de saint Théoctiste,
  qu’Andrinople eut la chance d’avoir pour célèbre chef religieux,
  sage connaisseur du dogme orthodoxe et des préceptes.
  Sa vie inspirée et irréprochable, consacrée à ces dogmes,
  le rend illustre et très saint.
  Lui qui connaît parfaitement le pouvoir des canons divins,
  aura moins besoin de les apprendre
  que de se les remémorer. Rien de plus, moi-même, je le confirme,
  qui ai éprouvé sa sagesse et sa prudence sublimes
  et en ai reçu l’éblouissement dans mon âme.
  En outre, les prélats aiment les emporter toujours avec eux
  comme armes et moyens
  afin, d’une part, de repousser les forces de Belial
  et, de l’autre, d’accomplir des oeuvres agréables à Dieu.
  Mais, père plein de bonté et pur prêtre de Dieu,
  exemple vivant des vertus, qui brilles parmi les hiérarques,
  si bien sûr tu communiques avec Dieu pour moi,
  je te devrai des remerciements ; comme je me suis soumis moi-même
  à des peines innombrables par amour pour toi,
  moi qui ai pour nom Manuel, et pour surnom Planude.
