Comment | Several variants of this epigram are known, cf. the entries in Vassis (2005: 749). 1) In the 16th-century manuscript Lesbos, Mone Leimonos 90, reading 'γράμμασιν μὲν' instead of 'ἐν γράμμασιν' and 'Χριστὸς' instead of 'Θεὸς' (cf. Papadopoulos-Kerameus (1884: 80)). 2) In the 16th/17th-century manuscript Sinai, Monê tes Hagias Aikaterines gr. 976, reading 'τὸ γράμμα' instead of 'ἐν γράμμασιν' and 'εἴδεν' instead of 'οἶδεν' (cf. Beneševič (1965: 345)). 3) These verses are also found at the beginning of an inscription in the church of Saint Demetrios in Palatitsa (cf. M. Andronikos, 1940, Κτητορική επιγραφή του Αγίου Δημητρίου της Παλατίτσας, Μακεδονικά, 1, 190-194) and at the beginning of an inscription at the entrance of church of the monastery of Saint Chariton near Konya in Turkey, reading 'τὸ γράμμα' instead of 'ἐν γράμμασιν' (cf. S. Eyice, 1967, Akmanstir (S. Chariton) in der Nähe von Konya und die Höhlenkirche von Sille, Byzantinsche Forschungen, 2, 162-183 and F.W. Hasluck, 1929, Christianity and Islam under the Sultans, vol. 2, 381). Text of Reuss (1941: 222) modified by DBBE. |
