| Comment | The comparison of the Theotokos with cherubim and seraphim seems to go back to the "Mariological troparion inc. Τὴν τιμιωτέραν τῶν Χερουβίμ, attributed to Kosmas of Jerusalem (c. 675–752), which was incorporated in various Byzantine liturgical services, most notably in the liturgy of St John Chrysostom". On this troparion see Kyrillos Athanasiades, Ἑρμηνεία εἰς τοὺς Ἀναβαθμοὺς τῆς Οκτωήχου παρὰ Νικηφόρου Καλλίστου τοῦ Ξανθοπούλου (Jerusalem: Τυπογραφεῖο τοῦ Παναγίου Τάφου, 1862).
