Ὅστις βούλεται τὸ φῶς ἐκεῖνο βλέψαι,
Ὀφείλει ταῦτα φυλάττειν ἐν καρδίᾳ·
Παθῶν σαρκικῶν καὶ λογισμῶν ἀρχείων,
Ὄρκου τε παντός, θυμοῦ καὶ τραχῆς δέ,
Καὶ περισπασμοῦ καὶ τῆς μνησικακίας,
Καὶ τοῦ μὴ κρῖναι τὸ σύνοχον ἀνθρώπους,
Εἶναι δὲ αὐτὸν λογικὸν καὶ τοὺς φρένας,
Καθαρόν τε τῶν σαρκικῶν μολυσμάτων,
Πρᾶον, ταπεινόν, ἡσύχιον ὑπάρχειν,
Ἐξαγγελτικὸν καὶ τῆς εἰρήνης τέκνον,
Ἐγκρατῆ εἶναι βρωμάτων καὶ πομάτων,
Καὶ τῇ προσευχῇ σχολάζειν ἀνενδότως,
Ἐν πᾶσι τούτοις, ἀρχὴν καὶ τέλος ἔχειν,
Τὸ κεφάλαιον ἀρετῶν, τὴν ἀγάπην.
