Ὅμηρος, ὃν λέγουσι πηγὴν τῶν λόγων | |
στιχοπλόκον γλυκύν τε τῶν ἐγκυκλίων, | |
ἐνεῖρεν οὐδὲν ἤπερ ὕθλους εἰς ὕθλους | |
τραγῳδίας ἑσμόν τε καὶ ῥαψῳδίας· | |
Ὀρφεὺς δὲ καὐτός, ὃν τεθαύμακαν μέγα | |
Ἕλληνες, οὐδὲν ᾖσεν ὀργάνων μέλος, | |
ᾠδῆς δὲ ῥυθμὸν ἔσχε πρὸς τὰ αἰσχίω, | |
ὄρχησιν αἰσχρὰν καὶ βέβηλον κομψίαν | |
εἰς τέρψιν ὄντως τῶν βδελυκτῶν δαιμόνων. | |
Σὺ δέ, προφῆτα, πατριάρχα, θευπάτορ, | |
ἄναξ κράτιστε, Δαυὶδ ἐξῃρημένε, | |
μαθὼν τὰ θεῖα τῶν ἄνω μυστηρίων, | |
ψαλτήριον τέτευχας ἐμμέτρων λόγων | |
τῆς τῶν Ἑβραίων ἐμπλόκου συμμετρίας, | |
καὶ τύμπανον πέπηχας ᾠδικοῦ μέλους | |
Θεοῦ πρὸς ὕμνον καὶ βροτῶν σωτηρίαν· | |
χοροὺς δ' ἐφευρὼν καὶ μελῳδοὺς ἀνέρας | |
οὓς εὗρεν οὐδεὶς πατριαρχῶν τῶν πάλαι | |
οὔτ' αὖ προφητῶν οὔτ' ἀνάκτων εἰς χθόνα, | |
ἦσας τὸ ᾆσμα τὸ ξένον τῶν ᾀσμάτων· | |
καὶ οὐρανώσας γῆν τε ταῖς ὑμνῳδίαις | |
λοιπόν τε τῇ φόρμιγγι τῆς μελῳδίας | |
ἠχῶν ἰαίνεις τοὺς νόας τῶν ἐμφρόνων | |
καὶ τῶν παθῶν τὰ θράσεα κωφεύεις ἅμα, | |
ὅτ' ἐκτραπεῖσα τοῦ δέοντος ἡ φύσις | |
πρὸς θηριώδεις ἂν σφαλῇ δυσμορφίας. | |
Ὦ τοῦ κόσμου καύχημα καὶ βροτῶν κλέος, | |
ὦ τῶν ἀνάκτων καὶ προφητῶν ἀκρότης, | |
ὦ πατριαρχῶν ἐκδεδειγμένη κάρα, | |
ὁ νοῦς ὁ θεῖος τῶν ἀποκρύφων λόγων, | |
ὁ μυσταγωγὸς τῆς ἄνω θεωρίας, | |
ὁ τὰ κρύφια κἄδηλα πατρικοῦ λόγου | |
σαφῶς μυηθεὶς καὶ μυήσας τοῖς κάτω, | |
ὡς ἂν φρονῶσιν οἱ κάτω τὰ τῶν ἄνω | |
τοῖς ἀγγέλοις συνῳδὰ μέλποντες κάτω. |

Comment | Follieri (1957) dates the composition of this poem to the ninth century, on the basis of metrical features of the poem (there is resolution in some verses, and the prosody is correct throughout). This epigram is also preserved in ms. Rome, Bibl. Vallicelliana E 37 (Martini 71), where it does not function as a book epigram. |
