Manuscript OXFORD - Trinity College 44 [1276-1300]
Place in Manuscript f. 217v
Contextual information The epigram accompanies a miniature of a cross at the end of Gregory of Nazianzus' Oratio 43. In the four corners of the cross we read the christogram 'ΙΣ ΧΣ ΝΙ ΚΑ'. The verses are written at the foot of the cross.
Metre(s) Dodecasyllable
Genre(s) Scribe-related epigram
Subject(s) Holy Cross
Comment The first verse is prosodically incorrect. Furthermore, the manuscript reads σταυροχριστιανοφύλαξ as one word, based on accentuation. Rhoby (2018: 324) assumes that the scribe wrongly copied his model: 'Es ist nicht unwahrscheinlich, dass in seiner Vorlage noch ein dritter Vers, in dem σταυροχριστιανο vorkam, vorhanden war. Das ausgelassene Ende von Vers 1 könnte z.B. ταύτην <ἁγίαν βίβλον> gelautet haben'.
