• Woman is the wrath of Zeus, given to men in the place of fire, a grievous exchange. For she burns up and withers man with care, and brings hasty old age on youth. Even Zeus does not possess Hera of the golden throne unvexed; indeed he hath often cast her out from the immortals to hang in the mist and clouds; Homer knew this, and hath described even Zeus as being wrath with his wife. Thus never is a woman at concord with her husband, not even when she lies beside him on a floor of gold.

• La femme, c'est la colère de Zeus; elle nous fut donnée pour racheter le feu, don funeste qui du feu est le contredon.Car elle brûle l'homme de soucis, elle le consume, elle change sa jeunesse en vieillesse prématurée. Zeus non plus n'est pas sans inquiétude avec Hêra au trône d'or; souvent du moins il l'a précipitée de chez les immortels, la suspendant au milieu de l'air et des nuages. Homère le sait, qui a représenté Zeus courroucé contre son épouse. Jamais, on le voit, une femme n'est d'accord avec son mari, pas même quand elle s'unit à lui sur un pavé d'or.

  und ein heillos Geschenk, das uns das Feuer ersetzt.
  Quälend verbrennt es den Mann mit ewigem Zanken, zermürbend
  reißt es, was jung ist an ihm, vorschnell ins Alter hinab.
  Selbst Kronion hat Not mit der goldenthronenden Hera,
  die er so oft aus dem Kreis himmlischer Götter verstieß
  und in die Luft und die Wolken gehängt. Das weiß schon Homeros,
  der auch Kronions Zorn gegen die Gattin beschrieb.
  So ist niemals ein Weib mit ihrem Gefährten im Einklang,
  nie, und genösse sie ihn auf einem Boden aus Gold.
