| Comment | Demoen (2022: 1378): "this epigram is also transmitted as part of the literary works of Manuel Philes: it is the final poem of a cycle of thirty-three tetrastichs on the heavenly ladder, from which the producers of the Stavronikita manuscript may have taken it. Was it originally meant to accompany a similar depiction of a ladder? We cannot say – the epigram makes sense also when applied to the Ladder as mere text." |
