Δαυὶδ μελῳδὲ μουσικῆς ἀποκρύφου,
σὺ μὲν δι’ αὐτῶν καὶ θανὼν ζῇς τῶν λόγων·
ἡμῖν δὲ τὴν σὴν ἐμμελῆ δίδως λύραν,
ἧς ἐστιν εὑρεῖν ἐμμελῆ τὰ πρακτέα.
Καὶ γὰρ δι’ αὐτῆς μυστικῶς κινουμένης
διώκεται μὲν ἐμπαθὴς πᾶσα φθίσις,
ἐλαύνεται δὲ δυσχερὴς ἅπας πόνος·
συστέλλεται δὲ συμφορῶν ἀπληστία·
κοιμίζεται δὲ γνωστικῆς ἅλμης κλύδων,
στηρίζεται δὲ τῶν παθῶν ἡ στερρότης·
καὶ τέρπεται μὲν τῆς ψυχῆς ἡ σεμνότης,
ἐλέγχεται δὲ τοῦ Σατὰν ἡ φαυλότης
ἐκ τῆς νοητῆς τῶν μελῶν εὐρυθμίας.
Ὠ τίς τοσαύτην εὗρεν ἀνθρώπων χάριν,
εἰ μὴ σὺ τὴν πρέπουσαν ἀνθρώποις χάριν;

Comment Legrand (1885: 22-24) refers to 'Bibliothèque nationale de Paris, B 146 Réserve', which is a printed edition from ca. 1494 or 1498.
The epigram is also to be found in the 16th-century manuscript Istanbul, Patr. Bibl. Panaghia 71 (a. 1506, f. 244r).

The attribution to Manuel Philes in uncertain. It is based on Miller (1857: 353-354 n. 4): 'Psalterii graeci Venetiis circa annum 1495 impressi extremam paginam hi claudunt versus sine nomine auctoris; sed facile agnoscas Manuelem Philem cui restituendi sunt'.
