λυσιτελῶν δὲ μηδαμῶς διειδέναι. | |
Ἦ γὰρ ἂν ᾔδεις Εὐσεβίου τοὺς πόνους | |
καὶ τοὺς ἀγῶνας, οὓς καθ᾽ Ἑλλήνων ἔτλη | |
φλυαρίαν τὰ τῶνδε μακρὰν δεικνύων, | |
ὅπως Ἰουδαίων τε δυσσεβῆ πλάνην | |
ἀναιρετικοῖς ἐκθριαμβεύει λόγοις, | |
τῶν μαρτύρων ἀγῶνας ὡς μεγαλύνει, | |
τῶν αἱρετικῶν ὡς ἀναίρει τὸ στίφος, | |
πρὸς πᾶν ὅπως χρήσιμος εἰς Θεοῦ σέβας. | |
Ἔδει σε ταῦτα γινώσκοντα καὶ πλέω | |
μὴ λεξιτηρεῖν κατ᾽ Ἰουδαίους ἴσως, | |
καὶ μὴ νοοῦντα τὸν νόον τῶν λέξεων, | |
ὕβρεις καταχεῖν τοῦ τοσούτου τὸν λόγον. |

Videris, amice, scire scribere contumelias, utilium autem nihil omnino scire. Profecto enim novisses Eusebii labores, et certamina quae in Gentiles sustinuit, eorum opiniones ingentes esse nugas demonstrans: quomodo Judaeorum impium errorem exitialibus triumphet orationibus, martyrum quomodo vertamina magnificet, haeraeticorum quomodo tollat agmina, quomodo in universum utilis sit ad Dei cultum. Oportebat te haec scientem et plura non verba-aucupari secundum Judaeos aeque, neque intelligentem verborum sensum, orationis in tantum virum effundere contumelias. |
