Comment | The text of the epigram refers to Maximus the Confessor's dispute with Pyrrhus. In 638 the emperor Heraclius (575-641) issued a religious decree (Ekthesis) in favour of the theory of monothelism. The dispute between the two theologians took place in Chartage in 645. In the end, Pyrrhus declared himself defeated by Maximus. |
