Palaeographical information γυνοσκις ] γυνοκεις corr. supra lineam
The poem was written in two stretches: either a second hand wrote vv. 5-18 or the same scribe wrote these lines with a different pen (cf. Herren et al. (2020: XXXV)).
Contextual information The epigram is written at the end of the Greek gospels, which are accompanied by interlinear Latin glosses.
This is the first line of the poem, which continues in Latin:
"Cerne: labore meo lingua Pelasga patet.
Quisque uelit sapiens sapientes gnoscere causas,
Sensibus in sacris sentiat artis opes.
Has euangelicas doctrinas doctor ab astris
Nobis praecipiens contulit ore Deus.
Qui regnit omne quod est, qui condidit omne creatum,
Qui factor mundi uirgine factus homo est;
Principium sine principio, finis sine fine est,
Omnipotens Dominus, lucis origo, Deus.
Lux aeterna, Dei Verbum, sapientia Patris,
Caelestis patriae uerba superna dare
Venit in hunc mundum, rex regum rexque Sabaoth,
Ipse Deus hominum, qui dedit omne bonum.
Fons bonitate potens, fons uitae fonsque sophiae,
Cor mundum famulis da, bone Chrite, tuis.
Saluator mundi, qui saecula sordida mundas,
Cum uirtute crucis crimina cuncta lauans,
Omnipotens, miserere mei, miserere dolentis:
Sum mihi namque mei causa doloris ego.
Da dolor absistat, da uitam daque sophiam:
Des mihi perpetui, te rogo, regna poli."

Comment The first-person narrator and author of this epigram is John Scottus Eriugena, an Irish scholar from the 9th century. He is, however, not the scribe of this occurrence, as ms. St. Gallen, Stiftbibliothek 48 is a contemporary copy of the original manuscript (cf. Herren et al. (2020: XVIII, XXXV)).
