Date | 11th c. |
Manuscript | VATICAN CITY - Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana - Vat. gr. 157 [11th c.] |

Palaeographical information | Written by the same hand and in the same script as the main text, unlike other sections of this folio's paratexts, which are either dated to a later period (upper margin) or written in majuscule. |
Contextual information | To be found after the end of the novel of Heliodorus. The book epigram is a part of the last section of a series of paratexts, including (1) a note on the bishopric of Heliodorus referred by Socrates and (2) the announcement of the end of the text. Section (3) begins with the book epigram, immediately followed by: 'θεοδοσίου παῖς φοῖνιξ ἡλιόδωρο(ς): | ὡς ἂν ὁρῶντες νέοι, σωφροσύνης μέγ' ἄεθλον ἀναδήσωνται:-'. |
Metre(s) | Dodecasyllable |
Genre(s) | Text-related epigram |
Subject(s) | Heliodoros of Emesa < Syria (4th c.) |
Comment | There seem to be three parts in section (3), divided by ':'. The first one is the only unmistakably metrical. The second has thirteen syllables and a proparoxytone ending coinciding with the name of the author 'ἡλιόδωρο(ς)' (where there could be also a synizesis; cf. Vassis 2005: 707, who considers it a second verse). The third and last section does not seem to be metrical. However, it seems to have a caesura after the seventh syllable, a possible characteristic of Byzantine dodecasyllables. It is also interesting to note the words with "poetic" morphology, such as the lack of augment ('θήκατο') or contraction ('ἄεθλον'), both in the metrical section and in the unmetrical one. Note the syntactical continuity of the whole section. |
