| Palaeographical information | The manuscript dates to the 10th century. The epigram is written in the lower margin by a later hand, broadly datable to the 12th-15th century (perhaps rather 13th-14th). The clumsy and hasty handwriting, containing many abbreviations and spelling mistakes, provides the text, in greyish-brown ink, on four lines occupying the full width of the margin (except for its left part, which is stained and therefore avoided). The fourth line is much shorter than the first three, is located in the centre of the margin's width. |
| Contextual information | The epigram is copied directly below another epigram (registered internally as Occurrence 24916, even though it is not a book epigram), which occupies one line in the upper part of the same margin and is transcribed by the same hand using same ink. The manuscript is a Menologion, the page contains De inventione capitis Ioannis Baptistae (BHG 840), and there does not seem to be a connection between the main text of the page and either of the epigrams in the margin. The same hand corrects a passage in the middle of the right column on the same page and adds a varia lectio (?) in the right margin next to it. Besides, the verso of the same folio contains a note by the same hand in the lower margin (+ ἄρπαξ ὁ ληστὶς ἀλλα της σοτ(η)ριας, pro ἅρπαξ ὁ λῃστὴς ἀλλὰ τῆς σωτηρίας), which is the first verse of a poem on the repentant robber, ascribed to Manuel Philes (cf. ms Paris, BnF, grec 1630 [Diktyon 51252], fol. 63r, and ms Istanbul, Πατριαρχική Βιβλιοθήκη Αγίας Τριάδος, 86 [Diktyon 33584], fol. 231v; see also Miller, Manuelis Philae Carmina, 1885, vol. I, p. 374, n. 1). |
