Contextual information The epigram is preceded by two metrical compositions by Iohannes Damascenus, 'Εὐεπίης μελέεσσιν έφύμνια ταῦτα λίγαίνει' (hymnum de Christi Nativitate) and 'Σήμερον άχράντοιο βαλὼν θεοφθεγγεῖ πυρσῶ' (iambi de Epiphania).
